The Crawler Chat

Postby Riobux » Mon May 05, 2014 9:22 am

Would there be able to be something like a chatbox on the forums, for inane banter a bit too inane for making a topic out of it?

Edit: So a chatroom got made in IRC.

Plug this into your browser's address bar to get it working.
http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=#starcrawlers

These are the normal details:
irc.quakenet.org
#starcrawlers

If you need any help setting up IRC if you're new to it, just post here.

the problem with chatboxes are, not all are safe to use, they can be a bit of a security risk, as most use flash, and that isn't exactly safe, I would advise against having such a feature,

yes sir, there are a handful of "chat room" mods available for phpBB... i would want to look into them a bit more, to see if they can be isolated to a specific forum, and what the exact permissions are... they are generally considered an unsafe feature to enable...

plus, we would want someone from Juggernaut to bless a feature like this... as chat rooms can be... problematic from time to time... :D

we need to remember, the website has personal details, download sections and other details, a hack attempt would be very bad indeed, which is why I strongly am against a flash or instant chat system, I have installed a few and quite a few aren't safe to use on a website that stores personal details, (especially like a site like this) and one database is shared throughout the site, so one hack attempt and all personal details will be spilled.

so I really wouldn't add a chat system, as good as they might sound, they aren't safe.

Maybe an off-site chatroom could be the solution?

IRC would be a good iidea, you can easy setup one, quakenet is a good site and pretty easy to register, and also you can have a bot that auto logs admin, another game developer site I belong too, has a IRC chatroom.

so if you go down that route, would be a good idea, and would keep this forum safe,

I mean having a Q bot,

https://www.quakenet.org/help/q/how-do-i-request-q

but yeah, using irc is the way to go.

that's what we ended up doing on the Timber & Stone forums (having a few fans head off and set up a separate irc, leveraging a free hosting service)... we then simply linked to the room from the forums... :)

#starcrawlers

registered a Q bot for it too.
